Background of the Study

Radio journalism remains one of the most accessible and impactful forms of media in rural communities, particularly in areas with limited access to other forms of communication. In Katsina-Ala Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State, where a significant portion of the population resides in rural areas, radio serves as a critical tool for education, information dissemination, and community mobilization. As one of the oldest forms of broadcast media, radio transcends barriers of literacy, providing content in local languages that resonate with the target audience. According to recent studies, radio journalism plays a pivotal role in educating rural communities about health, agriculture, and civic responsibilities (Adagba & Terhemba, 2023). Scholars argue that the interactive nature of radio programs, including call-ins and discussions, fosters active engagement and a sense of community (Igbanyi & Omale, 2024). However, the effectiveness of radio journalism is often constrained by inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, and limited professional capacity among journalists. Despite these challenges, radio remains a vital medium for addressing knowledge gaps and promoting behavioral change in rural settings. This study explores the effectiveness of radio journalism in educating rural communities in Katsina-Ala LGA and proposes strategies for enhancing its impact.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Rural communities in Katsina-Ala LGA face significant challenges in accessing quality education and timely information, exacerbated by high illiteracy rates and poor infrastructure. Radio journalism has the potential to bridge this gap by providing educational content tailored to the needs of these communities. However, questions remain about the extent to which radio journalism effectively educates rural audiences and addresses their specific challenges. The limited availability of locally relevant content, coupled with infrastructural and operational constraints, undermines the medium's potential. Furthermore, there is a lack of empirical data on the impact of radio journalism on education and behavioral change in Katsina-Ala LGA. This study seeks to address these issues by evaluating the effectiveness of radio journalism as an educational tool and identifying strategies to enhance its role in rural development.
